Gurman: new iPad mini targeted on sale by end of October

Bottom line: as of 16 September 2026, Apple has not published a date for an October event. The September iPhone show already happened—iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max, iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Series 12, and Watch Ultra 4 are out. Press now parks the next hardware wave in October: closer bets are the entry 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro, M6 iMac, and OLED iPad mini; the OLED touch MacBook / rumored MacBook Ultra can still slip to late 2026 or early 2027. Treat only an invitation on apple.com/apple-events as a real date.

The August fall event guide was written before the iPhone keynote and covers phones plus Apple Intelligence. This piece is the “second show”: Macs and iPad mini. Chip comparison stays in M6 vs M5 MacBook Pro; the single-SKU timeline is in M6 MacBook Pro release date; OS timing is in macOS 27 Golden Gate. M6 already shipped in the August Mac mini—see the M6 Mac mini AI agent checklist.

Separate the information layers
  • Apple has confirmed: August’s M6 (Mac mini) and the M5 Pro / Max / Ultra desktop chips; the September iPhone / Watch event. An October event itself has no invitation yet.
  • Credible reporting: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the OLED iPad mini “should go on sale by the end of October.” MacRumors and 9to5Mac place the entry 14-inch M6 Pro and M6 iMac this fall, and mention a possible October event.
  • Do not write into a PO: OLED touch notebook naming (MacBook Ultra), whether M6 Pro / Max are skipped, and final prices or colors are still reporting-level.

When is it? There is no invite yet

In years when Apple holds a second fall show after iPhone, it usually lands in mid-to-late October and leans Mac / iPad. Some years it is only a Newsroom drop. For 2026, both paths are still open.

Split “window” from “date”:

  • Window: press consensus is October. iPad mini also has a harder sell-by line—“on sale by the end of October” (still a report, not an Apple date).
  • Format: if the OLED touch MacBook is ready, a stage event is more likely. If it is only a chip-swap 14-inch Pro and iMac, a press release is enough. Cult of Mac and others have noted: nothing leaked that proves a live October keynote.
  • Pages to watch: Apple Events and Newsroom. No invite means do not put a guessed Tuesday on the calendar as fact.

Memory prices (often called RAMageddon) have not eased. Even if new Macs arrive in October, a price hike belongs in the budget more than a guessed start time. Apple already raised Mac prices in June 2026.

Keep this separate from the September iPhone event

Do not merge the two into one purchase sheet:

Show Done / expected Do not use it to answer
September iPhone event Done: 18 Pro lineup, iPhone Duo, Watch 12 / Ultra 4 When the M6 notebook ships, whether iPad mini goes OLED
October window Unannounced: Mac chip refreshes, iPad mini overhaul, possible home devices Whether to buy iPhone 18, how good Siri AI is

Phone-side calls stay in the September battery, Siri, and “skipped iPhone 18” pieces. This article only answers: when the second hardware wave is likely to appear, and which SKUs are worth waiting for.

M6 MacBook Pro: only the entry 14-inch

Per Gurman and 9to5Mac’s rundown, this fall’s MacBook Pro is not a full-line M6 refresh:

  • What moves: the entry 14-inch, to M6. It should also be one of the earlier consumer machines on Apple’s 2nm (TSMC) silicon—M6 already shipped in the August Mac mini.
  • What does not follow: M6 Pro and M6 Max. Reporting says Apple skips those SKUs; the next Pro / Max step is M7 in 2027.
  • Higher 14- / 16-inch configs: stay on M5 Pro / M5 Max. If you want the OLED touch tier, that is a different chip story (next section).

For engineers, “wait for M6 Pro before replacing work laptops” will likely burn a year. If you need more GPU or unified memory, the live options are keep M5 Pro / Max, see whether the OLED redesign offers M5 Ultra, or push heavy builds to a cloud node—not bet on a full-line chip swap in October.

Industrial design is expected to barely change. Use M6 vs M5 for the performance span; do not put unpublished benches in a bid. The August release-date check “Q4 window” can now be narrowed: entry 14-inch looks like October; the OLED redesign is a separate clock.

M6 iMac: chip refresh + new colors

The 24-inch iMac rumor is the most boring—and the most stable: M6 plus new colors, still basically the 2024 chassis. The last consumer iMac stopped at M4. Jumping to M6 will help compiles, on-device models, and multi-display, but do not expect a notch, stand, or panel change in the same breath.

Worth waiting if: the office buys one all-in-one, you want the new colorway, or you are still on M1 / M3. Not worth waiting if you need Pro ports and thermals—that is still Mac mini / Studio / MacBook Pro. The desktop M6 baseline already exists; see the Mac mini. The iMac is the same generation in a display.

OLED MacBook / Ultra: do not pin it to October

This is the late-2026 Mac rumor most likely to wreck a schedule. From MacRumors’ 11 September roundup and follow-ups:

  • Timing: late 2026 or early 2027—both appear in reporting. Do not write “ships in October.”
  • Chips: the high-end line is more often M5 Pro / M5 Max, not M6. A less certain claim is a configurable M5 Ultra (just launched in Mac Studio in August).
  • Form: OLED, touch, thinner, Dynamic Island; some reports use the name MacBook Ultra. macOS 27 is said to add a more touch-friendly UI—also still reporting-level.

If the reason is “wait for touch OLED before replacing the fleet,” put acceptance in 2027 Q1 and treat October as an observation point. If the reason is “entry 14-inch M6 is enough,” do not let Ultra rumors stall the order.

In the October window, the OLED iPad mini sell-by date is named more often than a guaranteed live keynote.

iPad mini: OLED, water resistance, no speaker holes

The current iPad mini (October 2024, A17 Pro) has gone two years without a major refresh. Bloomberg’s Gurman wrote in August that the OLED mini should go on sale by the end of October. That is a more actionable wait line than “will there be an October keynote”—and it is still not an Apple announcement.

Four points that keep showing up:

  1. OLED: LCD to OLED, with a clear step up in contrast and blacks. iPad Pro used OLED in 2024; this would be the first time on the small-size line.
  2. Chip: A19 Pro or A20 Pro. A20 Pro already shipped with iPhone 18 Pro / Duo in September; mini does not always get the newest A-series, so A19 Pro is still in play.
  3. More water-resistant housing: closer to iPhone-class protection. Current minis have no official IP rating; certification on the new one is unannounced.
  4. Vibration speakers: drop the holes to help sealing. That gets billed as the biggest mini overhaul in half a decade; treat teardowns and the product page as the source of truth.

For app teams: prepare OLED contrast and Dark Mode. Do not put an unpublished IP rating in the store listing. Size will almost certainly stay in the 8.3-inch class—not a new shape.

What else might land in the same window

MacRumors’ 11 September list still had “eight more products this year.” Lower-confidence items that could share the Mac / mini wave:

Product Reported points How to schedule
Apple TV Newer chip and RAM, N1 / Wi-Fi 7, Siri AI; little design change Reserve for home projects; do not lock October
HomePod mini New chip, N1, possible new colors Same event or a press release are both plausible
Home Hub All-new 6–7 inch square hub, table and wall versions New category—most likely to slip
Beats 360 Over-ear ANC; some reports said it could ship before end of September Do not bind it to Macs

Explicitly not this fall: M6 MacBook Air, entry iPad, OLED iPad Air, M6 iPad Pro—multiple calendars put those in spring 2027. Do not miss the October Pro / iMac wave waiting for another Air.

Buy now or wait: purchase and engineering timing

Four rules so “I heard there is an October event” does not freeze every PO:

  1. Waiting for the entry 14-inch M6 or M6 iMac: reasonable. Hold the order until an invite or Newsroom post; keep a price-hike column in the budget.
  2. Waiting for the OLED touch MacBook: only if you can accept a 2027 Q1 swap. Cover the gap with current M5 machines or a cloud Mac.
  3. Waiting for OLED iPad mini: fair if the pain is the screen and outdoor weather. Do not bet an unpublished IP rating on a ship-this-month project.
  4. Need Pro / Max GPU now: buy shipping M5 Pro / Max, or move the heavy work to an isolated node. Betting on “M6 Max in October” contradicts current reporting.

Do not put unpublished display APIs or Mac-touch-only controls on the engineering calendar. If new hardware does land in October, the first jobs are a stable Xcode, signing, TestFlight, and one isolated build machine. Units can arrive a week late; the build queue cannot stop.

You can wait for the event window; the build fleet cannot wait for an invite

The entry M6 notebook and OLED mini are worth seeing October before you buy. Xcode, signing, and CI cannot sit on “wait for the next keynote.” Split builds from hardware purchases on an isolated cloud Mac so the office machine is not the bottleneck in the window.

FAQ

What day is the Apple October 2026 event?

There is no official date. Press puts the window in October; iPad mini also has “on sale by the end of October” reporting. Use an apple.com/apple-events invite or Newsroom—do not write a guessed Tuesday into a contract.

Will the M6 MacBook Pro and the OLED MacBook launch together?

Probably not on the same day. The entry 14-inch M6 looks like a regular fall chip swap; OLED / touch / Ultra rumors more often say late 2026 or early 2027, still leaning M5 Pro / Max.

Should I still buy an iPad mini or a Mac now?

The current mini is 2024’s A17 Pro + LCD. If you are waiting for OLED and better weather sealing, the October window is reasonable. For Macs, it depends on tier: entry 14-inch and iMac are worth seeing an invite; people who need high-end GPU should not wait around for M6 Pro / Max.

Must engineering teams buy new hardware in week one?

Only if the roadmap needs day-one evidence for a new chip, OLED contrast, or a touch Mac. Most apps can wait for early feedback and a stable Xcode. Split builds from device QA and use a cloud Mac through the window.
